Wednesday April 22nd marks Earth Day 2026, a day marked for raising awareness and encouraging people to realise the role they can play in protecting our environment – protecting where we play.

This year, the theme for Earth Day is “Our Power, Our Planet”, and at Pledgeball, we’d like to add one extra word to that theme, Our Pitch.

Earth Day is all about empowering people to make a significant difference, and the same is true of football fans, who are well placed to shift the dial as individual fans, groups of fans and through our clubs.

A big way fans supporters can do this is by embracing retro kits over fast-fashion shirts.

Football shirts are more than just a piece of clothing for supporters to wear, they’re a uniting identity for fans to support their team.

However, due to clubs releasing new kits every season, unused and discarded shirts pile up year after year, causing environmental damage and fuelling fashion waste.

Fan-led initiatives to embrace retro kits can help shift attitudes towards a more serious consideration of the impact that their club has on the environment.

The unfortunate truth is that many clubs require bottom-up led drives in order for ambitious positive change to be made, but that just goes to show the power fans have as the heartbeat of any club.

A big example of this is Brentford, who last year on Earth day acknowledged the importance sustainability holds to its fanbase and that it has been a big driver for them to take action.

Additionally, fans can choose to travel cleaner and greener to games this Earth Day.

Initiatives to encourage greener travel options such as car sharing and public transport are effective, and can lead to clubs themselves making similar commitments.

An example of this being Pledgeball’s Sustainable Travel Charter, a commitment for clubs to reduce the number of domestic flights they take to games, of which fourteen EFL sides have agreed to.

This year’s Earth Day is all about “empowering individuals to drive change through advocacy, volunteering and community action,” and football fans are in a great position to truly make a difference.

If you have been inspired to help drive change and support sustainability in football, consider making a pledge on the Pledgeball website in support of your club for Earth Day.
