Last month, King Charles III outlined the new UK government’s key priorities to a joint session of Parliament. Among promised measures on housing, workers’ rights, and transport, one line likely caught the attention of football enthusiasts.
Football is by far the most popular sport in the world with a fanbase of about half of the world’s population. As a result of so many teams, competitions, and supporters, football has a massive carbon footprint that has many negative impacts on our environment.

On September 8th, 2024, the Richmond Athletic Ground will host The Big Green Clash, a Pledgeball and sustainable rugby event merging the thrill of rugby with a powerful message of environmental sustainability.
In early 2019, the seeds of Pledgeball were sown from fear, grief, and determination. As a former science teacher, I struggled with climate paralysis and asked, “What can we do?”
